Three R's

Kindergarten students have been learning how to be resourceful consumers during the month of April. With Earth Day being a day to remind people to reuse, reduce and recycle, students learned what will happen to our landfills if we don't begin to recognize what we do with the products we use every day. Kindergarten students brought items from home that were sorted in the classroom by plastics, paper, cardboard and aluminum. The students looked at the number they found in the recycling symbol and compared these numbers. To get a hands on approach to recycling, the students visited the Dodge Recycling Center sponsored by the Dodge Activities and Recreation Committee.
Jim Spenner and Mary Mandel gave the students a tour of the facilities. They showed the students how and where they sort the copy paper, cardboard, newspaper, magazines and aluminum cans. The students watched Mr. Spenner make a bale with the cardboard. It was fascinating watching all the cardboard being pressed in the machine. Cardboard can be made into the paper layer of drywall. Magazines can be used in insulation. Some copy paper goes to China as our recycled paper is better than the best paper in China. Many businesses in Dodge are saving products for the Dodge Recycling Center. People in the community are also helping save products. The Dodge Recycling Center is located directly north of Farmers State Bank. The center is open the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00-11:00 for your recycling needs.
