Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
“Cinco de Mayo”, or the Fifth of May, is an important holiday in Mexico. Although the Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, Mexicans also celebrate their country’s freedom on Cinco de Mayo. On this date in 1862, a small Mexican army defeated the great French army that was en route to Mexico City. This has become a popular holiday in the United States as well.
On Wednesday, May 7th, the Spanish III class, taught by Mrs. VanLengen, and the FCS 9 class, taught by Mrs. Lechtenberg, held a fiesta for the elementary classes. The older students began the fiesta by teaching the younger classes about Cinco de Mayo and its importance to the Mexican culture. Next was time for each elementary classroom to break a piñata! The previous week, the Spanish III and FCS 9 classes made colorful piñatas for this celebration. Finally, the high school students led the elementary students in singing special Cinco de Mayo songs.
High school students that participated in the fiesta were: Sara Hartline, Kyle Kempf, Dustin Klitz, Julie Kreikemeier, Shelby Kuehn, Nicole Miller, Kelly Pieper, Paige Sellhorst, and Kelly Sindelar. The teachers and students all had a great time at the fiesta. !Ole!
