On December 27, the National Honor Society took a trip to the Open Door Mission in Omaha for their second quarter service project. The Open Door Mission is comprised of the Lydia House for Women and Families, the Garland Thompson Men’s Center, permanent supportive housing, and the Timberlake Outreach Center. The group worked a shift from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Upon their arrival, they were informed about the purpose of the Open Door Mission by one of the head workers at the Timberlake Outreach Center. The center enables families to remain in their own homes by supplementing their incomes through preventive measures, such as providing monthly assistance with food, clothing, household goods, furniture, and appliances, and they also have classes available. This center is estimated to make a positive difference in the lives of more than 7,500 individuals per month. The job of the National Honor Society was to organize the warehouse where all of the donated items were dropped off. This was a great opportunity to learn about what kinds of items people are receiving and also which items they are still in need of.
